Thinking back at the changes in our Automotive industry over the course of the 20+ years I have been employed in Car Dealerships, I can clearly see another big change we are in the midst of.
The Internet has taken over most industries, in that the access of information to the customer, is much more readily available, before the customer even walks in the door. Pricing a new car, or a new TV, or video game set, basically comes down to a quick Google search for the lowest sale price or the best price from a reputable store.
The same is true of most New/Used car dealers now. Pricing is everything. Online specials and the ability to price products and services in range of other surrounding businesses is imperative. Any Business that has not caught on to this has already been left behind.
In 2004, Sullivan Brothers Toyota started an Internet Accessory business that at the time was scrutinized by many as a waste of profit and time. This dealer now is ranked in the top 3 out of more than 1700 dealers in the country for Toyota accessory sales. That is an extraordinary number considering the location and size of this dealer. it is a midsize dealer located half way between Boston, MA and Providence, RI. It is considered a midsize dealership based on its local Toyota unit in operation. Even so, this dealer has outdone some of the biggest dealers and dealer groups combined.
